As business owners we have a tendency to get wrapped up in our day-to-day activities and may find it difficult to spend time looking for new customers. That is until the pipeline dries up and we start scrambling to bring in more business.

It’s true that new projects from existing customers are one good source of “new” business, and that word-of-mouth from satisfied customers is your best advertising. However you also need to attract new customers you’ve never done business with before, and that requires a more proactive approach. It’s no secret that the number one tool a company uses when looking for new suppliers is the Internet, and one of the most powerful Internet tools is video.

4 good uses for video include:

  1. A virtual tour of your facility. This enables potential new customers to see your equipment and other capabilities. Sure, you can post a list of your machine tools on your web site, but seeing a video of your CNC machine shop makes it real. As an example, here’s a video tour of the 1 million square foot Haas factory.
  2. An “About Us” presentation. Beyond showing off your shop’s equipment, this type of video production tells the story of what kind of operation you have, the quality of your people and the unique benefits you offer your customers. It puts a human face on your shop and helps set you apart from the competition.
  3. Demonstrating new technologies. Perhaps you’ve expanded your capabilities by adding some advanced equipment, or you’ve developed some new machining techniques. Post a video that explains the benefits of the new technology to potential customers (faster delivery, reduced cost, etc.) on your web site, on YouTube, social media and on other online channels.
  4. Customer testimonials. This is an opportunity to take word-of-mouth to a new level. Posting videos of your satisfied customers endorsing your capabilities has far more impact than anything you can say about yourself.

Although you can sometimes get away with posting videos from your smart phone or digital camera, the above types of videos are most effective when professionally scripted and produced with proper lighting, sound, narration and editing. That way what potential customers see in the video will equal the quality of work they can expect from your CNC shop.
