CNC machine shops that produce highly complex, multi-sided parts for aerospace, automotive, heavy equipment, and other applications are typically prime candidates for 5-axis machining. However, even if you never work with such complicated parts, a 5- axis machining center may provide greater opportunities for increasing productivity and profitability.

While it’s true that only about 5% of machined parts absolutely require 5-axis machining, over 60% of parts are machined on 5 sides. These workpieces require a number of special fixtures and extensive operator time to set up multiple machine tools and to move the parts from one machine to another. With a 5-axis capability you can machine a part in one cycle, on one machine, with one setup and often without any special fixturing.

As we all know, every time an operator touches a part it adds cost to the finished product. This cost is an expense, not an investment, because it adds no value. However it does drive up production costs, reduces profit margins and makes it more difficult to compete for projects. Plus, in addition to these labor and fixture savings, you recapture valuable floor space and reduce maintenance costs by replacing several dedicated machine tools with one 5-axis machine.
