Investing in new equipment is no small matter for a CNC machine shop. Especially in the case of a machine tool or machining center. Making the right purchase can increase throughput, reduce your cost of operation and improve part quality and customer delivery time. So there’s a lot riding on your decision. Which means you need to ask yourself some important questions about the kind of machine you need including:

  • What kind of machine will improve the way I process the kinds of parts I typically make?
  • Should I consider possible future applications this machine could be used for?
  • Could a new machine enable us to perform certain processes we’re now outsourcing?
  • If we invest in a machine that has greater capabilities can we get jobs from new customers or markets?
  • Could improving our capabilities bring in more business from existing customers?

Equally important are the questions you should ask yourself about the machine tool builders and sellers you’re considering:

  • Is the machine tool builder well established and does it have a reputation for making reliable, long-lasting machines?
  • How many of their machine tools are in service nationwide?
  • How well trained and experienced are the service and support people?
  • Is service available nearby or must you wait for a technician to arrive from another part of the country?
  • Are replacement parts readily available, or must they be ordered and shipped in?
  • Is there someone I can call and actually talk to if I have a technical or service-related question?
  • Who will train my operators on how to use the new machine? Is this training included in the purchase price?
  • Is competitive financing available?
