Are Two Spindles Better Than One?

Turning machines with a second spindle can provide a number of benefits to CNC machine shops. For example, they enable the machine tool to automatically transfer a workpiece from one chuck to another for secondary operations such as drilling and tapping, both axially and radially. This “done-in-one” capability greatly reduces part handling, and that translates into lower cost per part. It also improves throughput and allows unattended operation. By adding automatic barfeeders and/or robotic part handling, lights out manufacturing is also a possibility.

Not all 2-spindle turning centers are the same, however. Some machines may have a secondary spindle that is inferior to the primary spindle, thus diminishing these advantages, and others may lack advanced programming capabilities that optimize performance.

With this in mind, here are 5 things to look for when considering adding a 2-spindle turning center to your shop:

  1. Programmable Secondary Spindle: Important because it can be programmed to remove the part from the primary chuck to allow back-work machining.
  2. Fully Synchronized Spindles: Both spindles can be easily programmed to accelerate and decelerate at the same speed and enable part-off and on-the-fly pass off of parts.
  3. Matching Chucks: Both spindles should have identical chucks plus sufficient power and torque for optimum performance.
  4. Tool Management: For unattended operation, it’s important that the operator can set up sufficient tools and that the turning center’s control monitors tool wear and automatically replaces worn tools.
  5. Smart Programming: Because adding a second spindle means reversing spindle rotation and toolpath direction, the dual spindle lathe should provide a mirroring function that reverses the program for the secondary spindle, making it easier for the operator to program and eliminating the chance of errors.
