SuccessfullBoss_193x163.jpgAs shop owners we want to get the most out of our assets, especially our employees. People, however, are not as simple as machines. We human beings are complex organisms that require a particular set of management skills. The more effective you are at applying these skills, the more successful you and your employees will be.

Among the many ways you can be a more successful boss are:

  1. Hire the right people. Let’s face it: Hiring can be a challenge, especially when there are orders to get out and we’re short-handed. However, hiring someone with the wrong set of skills, or a personality that doesn’t fit within your company culture is worse than working with reduced manpower. Take the time to ask the right questions, perform background checks and make sure the person you hire will be a productive member of your team.
  2. Set a good example. You can’t expect your employees to give the job their all if you don’t do the same. One simple way to do so is to be the first to arrive at the shop. Getting there a little earlier than your employees demonstrates your work ethic and commitment to the business. It also lets you be more productive. It’s amazing how much one can accomplish in an hour or so before the day’s interruptions begin.
  3. Admit when you’re wrong. Nobody bats 1000 in decision making, and you won’t lose face if you admit a mistake or miscalculation to your team. It only means you, too, are human and willing to acknowledge your imperfections. If you’ve hired the right people, they’re respect you for your honesty and be less likely to cover up their own missteps.
  4. Hold everyone accountable. In the same way, don’t let poor performers slide. People must take responsibility for their actions and the results. If, after giving an employee an opportunity and the resources to improve, they still can’t cut it, turn them loose. It’s only fair to the other employees and to the company.
  5. Help employees grow. Good employees want to perform well, advance themselves and be properly rewarded for their efforts. Your job is to make sure they can expand their skills through ongoing education and by taking on greater responsibilities. It also means being a mentor and providing competitive compensation.
