The Evolution of American-Made CNC Machine Tools

Posted on Jul 8, 2016 12:00:00 AM

In the mid-1980s lower-priced foreign competition forever changed the face of the American machine tool industry. Many long-established US builders simply could not survive this invasion. However, a California-based manufacturer of a unique collet indexing device was determined to prove that an affordable, accurate and reliable CNC machine could still be made in America. Thus was born Haas Automation.

The success of the first Haas VMC was the result of (1) studying the deficiencies of existing CNC machines to design a better product, and (2) streamlining the manufacturing process of the Haas machines to reduce production costs and the customer’s price.

In the decades since, Haas machines continue to improve both machine and control functionality, performance and reliability. The aim is always to enable users of Haas machine tools and accessories to make chips faster while producing quality parts.

Just as machine shops need to make their parts and products better, faster and more cost-effectively to compete in a global marketplace, Haas continuously improves its machines and its own production processes. That’s why the company designs all its own machines and controls and makes the key components of every Haas machine in-house, including spindles, transmissions, tool changers, lathe turret assemblies, rotary tables, and TSC unions.

Today Haas is the largest machine-tool builder in the US, making vertical and horizontal machining centers, CNC lathes, rotary tables, 5-axis machines, and such accessories as bar feeders and chip conveyors. All of these products are made in a one million square foot facility in Oxnard, California.

Haas Factory Outlets sell and support all of these products and provide locally based technical service and factory replacement parts.
